What is Prop 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about potential exposure to certain chemicals known to the state to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The list includes over 900 substances, many of which are naturally occurring in soil, water, and air. The warning is about the potential for exposure—not necessarily the presence of harmful levels in a product.
Why is this on a spice or seasoning product?
Some ingredients used in spice blends—especially herbs, roots, and other agricultural items—can naturally absorb trace amounts of heavy metals like lead or cadmium from the soil in which they’re grown. These elements are not added during production and can be present even in certified organic or non-GMO ingredients. If a product has the potential to expose someone in California to even a small amount of a listed substance above the state’s extremely low thresholds, a Prop 65 warning is required by law.
Is the product safe?
Yes. Our products meet FDA food safety standards and are safe to enjoy. The Prop 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe or in violation of safety guidelines—it is included out of an abundance of caution and to comply with California’s unique regulations. We use these products ourselves and share them with our families.
Why am I seeing this if I don’t live in California?
We include Prop 65 notices when applicable because California law requires the warning for any item that could be sold to a California resident, including through online orders. Even if you don’t live in California, you may still see this message for transparency and compliance.
